Government
Councillor Chair: Malgunas Yonge
Government: The government is a British-style House of Commons, called the Halasim Council. They are the top legislative branch in the country, and are currently led by Chair Malgunas Yonge (the top executive) and the Yus Party (liberal). The main opposition is Per-Jesuff Bloor and the Beedi Party (centrist). The lesser opposition parties include the Darphesp Party (socialist) and the Sirt Party (conservative). As a whole, the Council is left of center on the political spectrum, as the corporations in Halasim have only a few lobbyists in their pocket, mostly in the Sirt Party. The Council is re-elected every five years (on the 0’s and 5’s), and although the “None of the above” option is included on ballots, re-elections are rare.
The judicial branch is headed by the Supreme Court of Halasim, located in N’Eque, south of Nylo-Begoro. The court is nominated by the previous court every year (obviously, they can’t nominate themselves). The municipalities vote for the court.
Society
Ethnicities: Halasim, being a relative new nation, is mostly comprised of immigrants and former nomads from the surrounding territories.
Religions: Halasim is largely a secular society, and all forms of religion and worship are practiced, with no real conflict or clash among them.
Languages: The main language is English, or rather a slight mangling of it, as people have added their own inflections and verbiage to it. Also spoken by minorities of the population, but not recognized by the Council, are Bulsaran and Daltrian, two nomadic tongues.
Economy: Despite the punitive income tax rate of 69%, Halasim’s economy is starting to grow again, most notably in the southwestern Ississ region, where uranium mining is striking “gold”. Corporations and capitalists are viewed with suspicion with each action, and although the stock market is thriving in recent times, most view it as a rich (and heavily taxed) man’s playground. Halasim has yet to strike up strong economic relationships with its neighbours as of yet.
Transit: One of the crowning achievements of Halasim is its extensive transit system, both inside its municipalities and connecting them. Although each city is free to create its own bus and rapid transit network (with northern towns such as Ukyor starting out recently), they are all connected by the crown corporation Halasim Rainbow Rail. The RR is a high-speed subway which courses throughout the region at speeds in excess of 150 km/h, cutting the trip from Innou to Tengilon to just 12 minutes; not to mention being the principal revenue source for the nation, as well as the employer of a sizable portion of its citizens. As well, the Rainbow Rail has built bridges spanning from the main island to each minor one, carrying both cars and trains.
Geography and Climate
Highest point: 5150 m, Mount Farrokh
Lowest point: 30 m, The Townsend (the southernmost part of Halasim)
Avg. summer tempurature: 27.5 degrees
Avg. winter tempurature: -1.7 degrees
Halasim, being surrounded by water and other islands, is a moderated tropic. The humid weather is bearable for the most part, especially in the night. The forests are lush with the national animal, its reptilian counterparts, and all forms of bird and fish.
Political Leaders
The Councillor Chair has been held in the following progression:
1. Xanael Yonge (2 terms, Yus Party)
2. Karch Danforth (1 term, Beedi Party)
3. Merlin University (1.2 terms, died midterm, Yus Party)
4. Indios Spadina (1.8 terms, Yus Party)
5. Kennedy Scarborough (1 term, Sirt Party)
6. Diana Sheppard (1 term, Darphesp Party)
7. Malgunas Xanaelsson Yonge (Current Leader, in 2nd term, Yus Party)
History
The nation of Halasim is, compared to others in the region, relatively young. Created in the 1920s by Xanael Yonge, forged from a group of nomadic tribes with likeminded ideals and beliefs in the East Pacific. Halasim quickly grew in size and political clout as a firm believer in liberalism and socialism. The small nation tried their hardest to be as wise and equal, but occasional hiccups were to be had (the silencing of radical political groups among them).
Halasim’s second Chair, Karch Danforth, brought a more centrist philosophy to the nation, allowing uranium mining in the southwest of Halasim, but keeping the education system well-funded.
With the election of Merlin University, the topic of relocating to a smaller region where nations can be more neighbourly was brought to mind. University’s resolution of moving to the Japan region was met with overwhelming success, and thus the change was made. The national flag’s colours were darkened from their eye-searing hues to signify the change.
The University government did little more than that, which gave way to the Spadina government when Merlin passed on. Indios Spadina increased rights for minorities, for workers, for citizens (the “none of the above” being a bad idea), and soon Halasim was a world benchmark in the civil rights movement, and a bastion of liberalism in Japan.
However, the economy was continually weakening, and with that and the threat of invasion looming, Halasim elected a conservative (albeit a minority) government for the first time with Kennedy Scarborough and the Sirt Party. Scarborough passed legislation to increase Halasim’s navy, eventually converting a number of the smaller atolls into the legendary Spuer-class dreadnoughts. However, once the party tried to merge religion into the state (and introduce lyrics to the still-instrumental anthem), the Sirt Party met with stern opposition from all parties, and a vote of nonconfidence quickly brought an end to Council.
The newly-elected Diana Sheppard and her Darphesp Party brought socialism to the forefront, with the Rainbow Rail system proposed, funded entirely by the taxpayers and corporations, healthcare being partially subsidized, and putting the skids on the economy.
It too only lasted one term, with the current government of Malgunas Yonge surging to power. Yielding both fiscal responsibility and a liberal philosophy, Yonge boosted the Rainbow Rail project to completion, as well as increased foreign aid, and by letting those in the Opposition have seats in cabinet, has reduced the partisan rancor that paralyzed the Sheppard Council.
The most recent development brought Halasim to its current location in Hyrule, as Yonge decided that relocation to Hyrule would keep Halasim and her citizens safe from invasion and the constant in-fighting in the Japan region.
With a slim win in Council, the nation finds itself moving into the plots currently designated 57 and 61 (hopefully), being near Subsector Angelus, Melidan, and Macronesia. This brings Halasim to the current day, waiting for approval of its location, and the transplantation of the remainder of its cities and transit network. The flag's colours have been changed once more, and along with it the national motto and the currency.
