Torino Christmas Update

Key positions at time of writing (many are interim posts):
President: OneBZay(being elected)
Vice-President: Moldova
Secretary of Defence: Han Fei Zi
Foreign Minister: Kinonita

This has been another good few weeks for Torino, with the population reaching an all-time high and a more ordered government system adopted. Currently, there are elections for the Presidency and the Senate will be expanding from 8 seats to 13 in the next week. In addition, there have been major reforms to Torino’s army and courts which will make the future much more organised.
Foreign News:
Torino has moved onto the world stage recently, and has opened relations with some very powerful regions while cementing ties with older ones. Treaties with Finlandia and the Land of Kings and Emperors were signed. The Finlandia treaty encompassed mutual assistance, intelligence sharing and UN co-operation; whereas the Land of Kings and Emperors treaty was a non-aggression pact with mutual assistance involved.
More recently, embassies were opened with Gatesville, Hyrule and 10000 islands. A new Foreign Minister, Kinonita, was appointed in the cabinet re-shuffle and has revived Torino’s foreign relations. A treaty between Birmingham and Torino is also in the pipeline and being discussed.
Defence News:
Following a declaration of war on the Allied States of EuroIslanders in response to a large-scale attack on Torino’s forums, it became clear that Torino could not fight a war. The Senators accepted this and voted 4 to 2 to cease hostilities. Currently, a defence academy has been set up and proper training is being provided by the Torino General Staff for new recruits.
Recruitment News:
A team of about 5 recruiters has seen the population of Torino increase by about 45 nations in only 3 weeks. Security measures have been introduced in the form of a large database in an attempt to stop enemy activity in Torino. So far, the system is working smoothly and has identified suspicious nations for further investigation accurately. Also, a bank of recruitment messages has been created and filed away. The efficient system is bringing in new nations very quickly, it seems!
In other news, a recruiter was ejected from the UN after it transpired that 2 recruiters had been recruiting the same nation. Measures are now in place to rectify this.
Culture News:
The role-play section has taken off with a good selection of topics and stories there, with the most popular being “The Euphobian Civil War”. A regional Olympics is being planned in Torino and will include both role-play and actual events after the cabinet discussed the matter. So far; risk, chess, silly UN proposals and the “spamalympics” are on the agenda.
Political News:
Presidential elections are still running until December 27, and it looks like a close race. For the first time ever, four candidates are standing, and the exit poll is predicting a win for Aramatherius of the Torino Progressive Party. Nominations for the Senatorial elections are open, with at least five seats up for election. The Senate currently has this structure:
Torino Progressive Party Senators: 6
Conservative Party Senators: 1
Independent Senators: 1
Since there will be very few, if any, Torino Progressive Party candidates in the next election, the majority is set to be slashed drastically.
Courts News:
Two cases were heard in the courts; the first was of Torino v Omnia Americana. That was a trial in absentia for various crimes including the destruction of Torino’s forum, violating the Constitution and passing on intelligence secrets to enemies. A guilty verdict was entered for most of the charges and the maximum penalty was applied- that of permanent expulsion from Torino and deletion of his forum account.
The second case was that of Torino v Euphobes. This was based on the claim that Euphobes had disclosed confidential information to an enemy about Torino’s intentions to attack a certain invader region. However, the prosecution case was weak and attempted to indict Euphobes of treason under a non-existent act. Following the revelation that the information was not confidential and it was intended to convince EuroSoviets that Torino was not an invader region, the case was dropped.
Happy Christmas from Torino!
