Foreign Affairs Update from the Liberalian Federation
From the Liberalian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Friday 27th March 2009
New Government Elected
Following recent elections, a new administration under Palestine Free 2 has been formed, with Prime Minister Kurt serving as Deputy Prime Minister. The vote was particularly close-run, with the winning Social Democratic candidates narrowly beating their opponents.
The Full results:
On election, Prime Minister Palestine Free 2 appointed the following to government positions:
The government has begun a comprehensive legislative programme which has featured the return of "social legislation," laws which do not relate to the technical administration of the Liberalian Federation, and which had previously been absent from Parliament for some time.
Delegate Elections
Elections for the World Assembly Delegates of the Federation regions of New Liberalia, Liberalia, and WWSETI are currently underway. They are due to end 2nd April.
Legislative Affairs
As previously mentioned, Parliament has overseen the discussion of several pieces of "social legislation" recently, notably with the passage of both the Sexual Orientation and Reproductive Freedom Bill, and the Capital Punishment Abolition Bill.
A number of changes to governmental procedure have occurred with the passage of the Parliamentary Institutions Bill and the Finance Reform Act. The Bureau of Statistics Act, introduced by the government, failed to receive adequate support. A vote of no-confidence against Speaker Trodenhiem was withdrawn by its sponser.
Presently, major legislative votes underway include the FRA Bill on the subject of Liberalia's possible membership of the Founderless Region Alliance and the approval of the government's nominations for the region's Reserve Bank.
Parliamentary Controversies
With the introduction of the Parliamentary Institutions Bill, requiring all members to sign the Parliamentary Roll, Speaker Trodenhiem drew criticism in some quarters for removing Latagon on his refusal to do so. A similar sanction was taken against RealBigSwede for the same reason. A discussion on the validity of this judgment occurred, in which it was alleged that, though acting in accordance with the Parliamentary Institutions Bill, the Speaker was in breach of the terms of the Constitution.
The Speaker has since pressed charges against RealBigSwede for alleged slander and harrassment. Latagon has also been charged for breaching the parliamentary ban handed to him by the Speaker. In a further twist, RealBigSwede has demanded that the Speaker be tried for voter fraud.
The situation as yet remains unresolved.
