Guardian Council Elections
An election has been held in the past few days to fill the empty seat formerly held by Forthampton on the region’s Guardian Council. Candidates were:
East Ying
Julio Trigman
Loslakia
Northern Sushi
Osafune
Prez
Tupelope
The final results are as follows:
Julio Trigman - 4
Prez - 4
East Ying - 2
Loslakia - 2
Tupelope - 2
Northern Sushi - 1
Osafune - 1
As there was only one seat to be filled, it had been declared that a run-off election is to be held between Julio Trigman and Prez, provisionally scheduled for 16-19 September. However, in an act of apparent generosity, Julio Trigman conceded to Prez, feeling that he had been on the GC far longer and that he could always wait until the next election. In other election-related news, an election for the WA Delegate, scheduled to last from 14-20 September, has just been announced.
Legislative Updates
The Parliament passed a minor amendment to the Constitution, a repeal of the Application into the FRA Bill, an amendment to the Regional Symbols Act and an amendment to the Liberalian Election Act. The Information Release Act was shot down by Parliament, and an act that would have given members of WWSETI their own local government was sent back to the Debate Chamber to be put up for vote again.
Foreign Affairs Updates
Liberalia’s parliament has passed a treaty forming an alliance with the Commonwealth Society. This treaty guarantees mutual defence, formal or informal discussions between the two regions at least once per month, intelligence sharing where relevant to threats to the other region’s interests, and other things.
In other foreign affairs news, a summit is being held on the Liberalia forums between the Liberalian Federation and Canada, which has been discussing issues such as recruitment, NationStates 2, and opportunities for interregional cooperation. A summit with Lichentia is also being held. Forum members have also been discussing the Open Campus program, proposed by Equilism and with several regions already signed up to participate, and it looks likely that Liberalia will participate, with the President being all for it and the Prime Minister saying that it’s worth a try.
Newcomers to Liberalia
Warm welcomes go out to UNDEAD HOARD, Princess Melody and San Estiago, and warm welcomes back to Son of Hagge, Random Textbox Inputs, Soccersian and East Ying.
New Regional Symbols
The amendment to the Regional Symbols act, mentioned above, has introduced a new flag to the Liberalian Federation, designed by Reformists. It has also introduced a new anthem, written by New Indie. Credit goes to them both, and the two pieces of work can be seen below.
I came from the old times, of Hagge’s ancient plains
I am Carops, I’m Latagon, the keeper of the flame
I fled the fort at Christmas
At the barrel of a gun
I’m a Christmas Revolutionary, I’m Liberalian
I came from the good times, the years of ages gold
I saw Lichentia, The Serenade, and I saw the times go cold
I went through all the crises
But still I ravaged on
I came, I stayed, never betrayed, I’m Liberalian
We are one
But we are many
And from all the lands on Earth we come
We share a dream
And sing with one voice
I am, you are, we’re Liberalian
I came from the dark times, the times of tyranny,
But through the dark, I saw the light, what freedom meant to me
I fought against oppression
I sought the distant sun
I’m a Summer Revolutionary, I’m Liberalian
I came from the new times, the times we call our own
I saw the peace the others reached, that I’m proud to call my home
I’m the newest of our history
I see the future come
The spirit of this great, great land; I’m Liberalian
We are one
But we are many
And from all the lands on Earth we come
We share a dream
And sing with one voice
I am, you are, we’re Liberalian
(To the tune of a song by The Seekers called "I Am Australian.")

The Great Debate Continues
The Great Debate, one of Liberalia’s favourite places to challenge the viewpoints of anybody who dares argue for the opposing side, has been officially rather quiet as of late - waiting for a new official debate to start, members decided to hold one anyway, and started debating the practicality of communism. Initial criticisms were countered with detailed analysis of Marxist theory, which were then countered with detailed analysis of the problems with Marxist theory, much to the chagrin of anyone not wanting to wade through detailed analyses. However, just as the debate was beginning to drift off-topic, a new official debate started, entitled “Media: Crusaders of Justice or Clueless Scaremongers”. Not much has been said as of yet, but this media outlet would like to be the first to say that it sees itself more as a crusader of justice than as a clueless scaremonger.
Hall of Fame Nominations Begin
Nominations for the Liberalian Hall of Fame have begun for the second time since the Hall was set up. This is a very special event, held once only every six months, with a maximum of two members being inducted into the Hall of Fame each time. As such, it is one of the region’s most prestigious awards, and we look forward to seeing who the committee will decide deserves to be named as an inductee.

The current standings in the Liberalian Soccer League (known as “football” to the rest of the world) are as follows, with 4 games left to play:

And Finally
The Labour Party has announced that it is to hold a party conference from 15-25 September. Members have so far not asked for nomination papers, and nobody has had to be fired, showing once more that Liberalian politics are preferable to the real thing.
Latest developments in Who Wants To Be An Immigrant involve supernovae, the Large Hadron Collider, and siccing Dick Cheney on the other players.
Liberalia, not content with the masses and masses of forum space it has access to, is considering setting up its own domain, which will give Liberalians the pride of knowing that they have an area of the internet that they can truly call their own, and the schadenfreude of knowing that someone else is paying. (In this case, Reformists, to whom we would like to express our gratitude.)
Liberalians are talking about John McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin as Vice Presidential Candidate, with reactions ranging from approval to the desire to “set [her] on fire and burn her like a witch”.
