Borderlands of Mayohiga
Official Language: None
Spoken: Primarily Japanese, various other languages spoken by people passing through from the outside world)
Capital: not applicable
Year of Creation: 1884 AD
Mayohiga appears to be a quiet and tranquil village. However, it lies along the border (in fact, it is the border) between the rest of Earth and the sealed-off land of Gensokyo, a place consisting of both humans and supernatural beings called youkai. The border was established by humans living in the land in 1884 to separate it from the outside, being a very dangerous place due to the presence of the human-eating youkai.
Travelers approaching the border (really the barrier) of Gensokyo are in danger of losing their way and ending up in the "village" of Mayohiga. The village does exist, but its actual size and probably its population are impossible to measure, and travelers are drawn to the village by illusions and the strange nature of the lands surrounding the border. Even worse, people from the outside world are sometimes pulled into Gensokyo through the border, even if they live very far away from Gensokyo itself. This phenomenon has brought many immigrants, against their will, into Gensokyo, and the only way back is dangerous and difficult.
This wave of unwilling immigration can be blamed on Yukari Yakumo, a supremely powerful youkai living in Mayohiga who has the ability to manipulate all boundaries. She can essentially break through space, bringing two very far-away points very close to each other. Presumably, this is how she manages to drag humans from the outside world into Gensokyo. Yukari also has a sort of familiar, Ran Yakumo, who manages daily life on the borderlands. This is necessary, since Yukari spends most of her time in a deep sleep.
The government of Mayohiga is probably a traditional or tribal form, though considering Yukari's powers, she might she called the queen of the place. Since she doesn't really exert control over the people of the land once they're residents, however, that's not quite the truth. She's not even really a bad person. Neither are most of the youkai. They just like to eat humans sometimes, you know? It's never meant to be personal.
(note: none of this is original. Yeah, I lifted the name, story and all from a game. You have a problem with that?)
