History
The entire area up until the 1500's was a shifting quagmire of principailties. These principalies were constantly at war with each other, especially in rough winters or times of drought when food or water can become scarce.
In 1221, Emperor Kapodistra united the greek-speaking Gydan Kingdom to the west of the warring Malgat Principalities. Eventually, Malgatia too would be completely unified in 1253 after the conquests of King Gerard. Gerard began a plan of rapid military buildup to defend against outside forces now that various empires had began laying claims to over seas territories.
Kapodistra II saw this as a direct threat to Gydan, and began the first of three Malgat/Gydan Wars. Malgatia had yet established effective trade routes with foreign nations and had very little access to iron, and was forced to fight with primarily bronze and copper weapons. Gydan on the other hand was rich in iron. During the war, Gydan decimated the Maglat army but was unable to make significant territorial claims.
Malgatia managed to rebuild it's military, and with the establishment of foreign trade routes, began the second Gydan/Malgat War with the intent of getting revenge on Gydan. Malgatia invaded the south and seized the vast resources of the S. Gydan Range. They could not overcome the nearly inhospitable Gydan Wastes, and the invasion stoped there.
Finally in the early 1900's, the reliance on oil came about, something the Gydan Wastes was rich in. So in 1935, Malgatia began the third Gydan/Malgat war and finally put an end to the Gydan Kingdom.
Malgatia made the shift to a democratic republic in the early 1800s when revolutions began taking place across the globe. Rebels usurped power from King John III in 1819 and established it's current system.
Ever since then, Malgatia has actively persued maintaining a large military to deter Gydan and other potential invaders. The current Malgat Military, while large (1.5 million active duty, 4 million reserves), is poorly trained and equiped. The military does not far well with logistics either. All of this culminates into a very weak military.
More recently, a "rebel" group appeared in the country's western Gydan provence. The group, called "Expatriates" (named so because they feel they have been expatriatised from Gydan), and their motives remain unclear. They attempted to take over the government, but not through force. They attempted to be democratically elected into leadership, and they appeared to be more of a political party than a rebel group. However, after they were banned from participating in the federal government, they raised an armed wing saying it was for their own defense against the federal government.
During this period, they were like a thorn in the fed's side, acting almost like a state-within-a-state, refusing to go along with federal legislation. For example, abortion was legalized nationally by the Supreme Court, but in Gydan it was outlawed by Expatriates.
After things like this went on like this for a couple years, tensions rose dramatically. It broke down into all out civil war when the Secretary of State was assassinated in a daring attack on the capitol, believed to have been done by Expatriates.
Little did the Rhodes Administration know, but Matthew Warren, the Secretary of Commerce and Natural Resources, was their true leader. He knew all of their fed's plans well ahead of time, and Expatriates would march to vicotry, depose the government, and put Matthew "Osafune" Warren into power as the Prime Minister of the Dominion of Malgatia (previously the Republic of Malgatia).
With Osafune in charge, Malgatia began to upgrade it's military into a more modern military force with acquiring adequate transportation for military units and supplies on the top of the list. The militarization continues to this day.
