History:
Right, there we were, my crew and I; during a violent storm our compass had been destroyed, and we were now... somewhere else. To tell the truth, we had absolutely no idea where we were, but there was land in the horizon, which couldn't be all bad.
Long story short; it wasn't. The people were very friendly, and welcomed us into their homes, as if we were family.
In the evenings around the fires, the people, whom we now knew as our sisters and brothers, told us stories about the king who ruled their land. Though everything seemed peaceful now, it had only been a few months since his men had last plundered their village, and they were sure to return as soon as harvest was over. Touched by the kindness of the people, and enraged by the stories they told, the crew and I decided that, since we had little chance of ever getting home (even if we knew the way, our ship was severely damaged, and would have to be build from scrap, basically), we might as well stay, and help them fight this Evil King. We tore the ship apart, made weapons out of it, and build a wall around the city, using tree from the surrounding woods. Rumor spread fast, and the neighboring villages soon joined us within the walls.
Well, yadda, yadda, yadda, big battle followed, more people joined, large army headed for the king's castle and another big battle was won by the people there. I honestly only know half of the story of these battles, as I was traveling around the country, telling everybody that a revolution was happening, and that they should join us. They did.(Historians are collecting the whole story of the battles of the revolution as we speak.)
After all was won, a government was elected. I was happy, sitting around playing with my newborn kid, and relaxing with the missus, but one day I received a letter from the government(They had a guy read this aloud in front of my house, y'know "hear ye, hear ye"-style, so I had no possibility to just dismiss it... jeez...).
It said stuff about how I had helped join the masses against the Evil King, and how unselfishly I had used my own ship to arm the people, and a lot of other very flattering stuff, ending with something along the lines of: "...therefore we ask you, most humbly, if you would do us the great honor of being the leader of this new state" -I mean, imagine my reaction(this is around eight o'clock in the morning, I'm not even fully dressed yet); mouth open, one eyebrow raised, mug of coffee has dropped out of hand, face turned completely white, staring at the guy, stuttering: "uhm... er... can I think about that for a sec?"
I could. I did. I thought about it for a week actually, and then I went to talk to the head of government. I told them what my ideas were, and how I wanted to do this thing, they said "Sure. We've got weapons now, if we don't like what we see, we'll just kill you." I said "...Hang on, that doesn't sound cool at all..." the head fell to the floor, laughing; "Just kidding, we'll see how it goes, and in a few years we'll have an election, okay?" "...okay." I said, and we shook hands, and went down to the local pub, to tell the people about the news, and to drink all night.
The next day they changed the name of the country to The Empire Of Martincore, and the capital to Martingrad (I think it's a bit too much, personally. I usually call it The Empire Of Me . People think I'm a corrupt dictator, but I'm really not that bad, seriously, you'll see...
Sincerely yours,
Martincore.
