I just got back from Eastern Creek Raceway, about 45 minutes west of my house. There I saw the Australian round of the A1GP, the World Cup of Motorsport. Yesterday, I went to watch qualifying. It went well for me, being English. Great Britain qualified third. Australia qualified 18th, and the USA 7th.
Come this morning, and the first race. Great Britain got off to a great start, taking second from New Zealand on the first corner, but the dice allowed Germany to get away. Then, Lebanon crashed out, causing the safety car to be deployed. Good for Great Britain? No. Our driver sucks at restarts. So, the safety car pulls off after a couple laps, and Germany shoots away. New Zealand take Great Britain on the first corner, and France start putting on the pressure. Then, disaster. France overtakes Britain, and then the British front left gets a puncture. All this is on the second last lap. Germany go on to win the race quite comfortably.
Then, the second race. Great Britain have to start from 19th. So, first lap, all clean. Great Britain make up four places. Until turn 5. Singapore runs deep into the side of the Canadian car. The Canadian car flips, and Singapore goes off the track as well. Safety Car. It takes a few laps to clear the mess. Luckily, the Canadian driver was ok. So, the safety car is about to come in, and the South African driver jumps on the throttle too early, and runs into the back of the green and white car of Pakistan. South Africa are out of the race, and Pakistan are without a rear wing. One more lap of Safety Car. The Safety Car breaks off, and Germany, in second because of an awesome pass by New Zealand on the first corner of the first lap, pull into the pits, along with a few others. GB up to tenth. New Zealand pit next lap, but have a slow stop, and Germany leap frog them. China is currently leading the race, but haven't pitted. It is several laps before China open up a 30 second lead, enough to stay ahead after a pit stop. But they stay out. Germany, flying, close the gap to 20 seconds. China pit, and come out fifth, behind the Czech Republic, and Holland. They slowly but surely catch up to the Czech car, and then the Dutch car. However, New Zealand, in second, is far ahead, and Germany is even further. Great Britain are ninth, and pressuring America, who are pressuring Switzerland. France is up the back of GB. Slowly, the US and Switzerland pull away, and Great Britain is left with the task of holding off France. France get by with 10 laps to go. Now, Great Britain have to defend from Brasil, for the final points position. They hold them off. Germany win the race, New Zealand second, and an amazing drive from the Chinese driver secures China's first ever podium in the series. Australia finish 14th, much to the disappointment of the home crowd.
It was an awesome weekend, my eardrums are almost exploded due to the noise, and the support classes were excellent. I also got a pit pass, which allowed me to stand 3 feet away from a Lamboughini Diablo, a Lotus Elise, a Porsche 911, and a Ferrari 360. I could have gone up and touched them if I wanted.
The point to this thread? I'm bored, and I have a story to tell. Is that a crime?
